Cinema as a medium of change in society
In this Ted talk, conducted by Nagesh Kukunoor, Nagesh speaks about the influence that stories and storytelling have on society. He explains how since the beginning of time storytelling has been the medium through which we deliver and spread thoughts and Ideas, he cites sources such as the bible to express his point that stories tend to have messages in them in order to leave the audience with a message on morality rather than serving the purpose of just entertaining. “The use of imagery to get ideas across”, the states that if done properly, a “good film” can influence an audience to act, rather than just viewing a film. Film can be made to offer a different perspective, and if done properly can change the minds of multiple audience members. In this ted talk Nagesh Kukunoor uses mostly anecdotal evidence, rather than empirical data. However for the purpose of his argument, it makes more sense to rationalize his argument rather than to present evidence, as his argument lies in his personal relationship to cinema, and even though I would have wished to see him include more citations and evidence, I believe that his argument and claim still stand strong. Kukunoor is an Indian filmmaker and screenwriter. He is known for movies such as Hyderabad Blues (1998), Rockford (1999), 3 Deewarein (2003), Iqbal (2005) and Dor (2006), he is a very experienced filmmaker and uses rhetorical choices such as anecdotal experiences that not many of us can relate to in order to increase his authority. He presents his argument in a very complicated manner as if to increase his own authority and convince the audience that he has more experience than most of his viewers and therefore we should believe him. That said he still uses simple and concise sentence structure and vocabulary so that he can spread his message to as wide as an audience as possible. This Ted talk helped me to view a different perspective on why cinema and mediums of storytelling are such effective mediums of communicating messages. As stories can be presented in a way to conceal morals and rationalize positions and arguments in a compelling way. This Ted talk helped me understand the importance of storytelling in general to offer different perspectives on a certain issue. In my case this would serve to show audiences a different perspective on topics such as race and gender.

Madon, Stephanie, et al. “The Accumulation of Stereotype-Based Self-Fulfilling Prophecies.” Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, vol. 115, no. 5, Nov. 2018, pp. 825–844. EBSCOhost, doi:10.1037/pspi0000142.supp (Supplemental).
Stephanie Madon talks about how stereotypes can lead to a concept in psychology referred to as “self fulfilling prophecies”. Madon begins by explaining what self fulfilling prophecies are, and how false ideologies can be sustained in individuals minds with little evidence. She then expresses that in order to get rid of this concept is to experimentally manipulate a new perspective into the viewers mind. The author continues to describe her experiments in order to test this hypothesis. She then follows to The database I believe to be as credible as it is scientific documentation, rather than a biased theory. She conducted experiments and analyzed the observations to create a evidence based theory. Stephanie madon has a Phd in psychology and teaches in the psychology department at Iowa State University. She analyzes how social influence alters individuals behavior.
Popular Culture
In this social experiment conducted by CNA Insider, we take a look at a different perspective towards representations of minorities and how they feel in society. The creator takes multiple different ethnicities and races and conducts a question based experiment to see how they feel portrayed in modern culture and to see the discrimination that they face in the U.S. CNA insider is a website and new channel that takes “asian” perspectives. CNA seems to be very biased as it seems to ask very one sided questions as to frame their subjects to being oppressed. It also includes races and ethnicities that are considered to me minorities and lacks variation. CNA is not a reliable news source, and mainly uses anecdotal evidence to prove their arguments, they base their evidence of social experiments which lack the appropriate scientific procedures. CNA choses to interview only certain ethnicities to present an idea that depression is present in america, and while it might be, it must be backed up by evidence. However the video offered me a new perspective, as it made me think of how minorities feel represented in culture, such as in commercials and models. This interview helped me answer the question of how minorities are represented in the media.
