Hey guys what’s up? Welcome to knowing better, I’m your host Mateo Martinez. For those of you that are just joining us, I’m an international film school student. In this podcast I talk about theories on film, analysis of scenes, directors, movies and narrative elements that work together to portray a message. However, today, I want to target Colombian Filmmakers and young filmmakers in general that are interested in working in the media. If any of you are wondering what it’s like, how challenging it is and what influences are needed to make it? You have come to the right place. Today I interviewed filmmaker, actor, model and Instagram influencer: Emilio Estrada.

Emilio Estrada is a young artist that I happened to know back from home, my boy, he is the son of we’ll known model and actress: Paola Turbay. Which has appeared in multiple t.v. Shows such as Californication and has won countless beauty pageants. Despite his age Emilio Estrada considers himself a artist and entrepreneur, he mixes art with business. Emilio is a co owner for the brand @the.buddha.co and tries to mix art with business. Today I decided I would give him a call and see how it goes!

Interview Transcript:
Mateo: Hi Emilio how are you

Emilio: Hello Mateo, perfect, yes

Mateo: Emilio so I told you before I'm doing this project for my academic writing class and I was wondering if I could ask you a few questions about you're your professional career in Colombia

Emilio: Yes, yes of course

Mateo: So I know you're into media, like advertising, etc... So I wanted to ask you what you think is a most challenging part of being in that environment in Colombia

Emilio: I will say sometimes customers I work for, my bosses in that case, many times they have different visions for different works, it's hard to turn words into visuals. Due to the different points of view its very hard to satisfy everyone, I always have to go back and edit so that they can interpret the works in different ways.

Paola Turbay
Mateo: I wanted to talk about your household, where your mother is Paola Turbay, she has one countless beauty pageants and is a very successful actress, so I wanted to ask, what kinds of connections have you made due to this, and how has that affected your success in the field.

Emilio: Well the first time I was exposed to this medium, was when I was living in Colombia and my mother was looking for shows In California, she would film the auditions and I would record them, I’m not sure if you’re aware but she also created the Bogota film festival, Indiebo, where many independent directors and artists that go to the event, I would always be present and make connections through this festival, so I would say that definitely helped with my learning process and spread my networking here in Colombia. Being introduced to this world through my mother gave me a huge head start, which i'm very grateful for.

Mateo: You talk about Indiebo and Film in Colombia, would you consider colombia has a good “film/cinema program?

Emilio: I would say we have a lot to make film about, given our story our backgrounds, the indigenous, the culture, landscaped, ecology, we have a lot to make film about, however education wise there are definitely better film schools and programs outside of the country. But coming back to Colombia to work, is a great way to emerge in this field of work because we have so much to work with.

Well guys that was the interview with entrepreneur Emilio Estrada, it's very important that we talk about this due to the fact that not many people that aspire to be filmmakers of artists know what tools, connections or influences are needed to succeed in the medium. It's very hard to make it, as it’s so competitive. However with hard work and influences in the right places, we are able to get really far, take a look at Emilio Estrada. I think that this is a topic that's not discussed as much, many people talk about content, however not many people talk about what it takes to be successful, how to create personal branding. Because Film and art is like any other medium, you are a salesman, trying to sell your product to the world, so personal branding is a requirement. This is why i thought I would talk about film business, because at the end of the day, film, art, advertising are just as viable careers as any other medium, you just have to be able to spread your network, and make connections that are going to push forward your career as an artist. There is no need to settle. Alright guys, thank you for tuning in, again This is knowing better, and I hope you have a great day!
